TWQ: Special Songs (Plus Santa Letter)

The Weekend Question (TWQ) this week concentrates on musical memories.

What songs have a special meaning in your life and why? What memories do they bring back?

Here is my answer:

'Hey Jude' by The Beatles reminds be of my last day at school. As we didn't do anything that day, a lot of us sat in rooms. The teachers were not around. I had bought a cassette player, and one of the songs played was that one. I turned the volume way up and everybody enjoyed it. Right after that, I left the school for good.

'Morningtown Ride' by The Seekers was one of the earliest songs I ever heard, and it always brings back memories of childhood. I once went to a concert by Judith Durham (lead singer of The Seekers). When she sang that, I found it chilling.

Now it's over to you...

---------------------

As a bonus, I found this. It's a do-it-yourself Santa letter for adults to write. I found it hilarious when the result came out for me. Try it. It's on Dear Santa

"The Gloucester Wassail" makes me cry. I remember the wonderful people I used to sing it with onstage. All scattered to the four winds by now.

"Rachmaninoff's Variations on a theme by Paganini" also make me cry. Made me fall in love with my first college boyfriend, a concert pianist.

Here from Michele.

Although I don't listen to any of his other music, "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg will always remind me of my father's dying.

Now, on a non-sad note, Hi! Michele sent me!

In My Life, by the Beatles. I love the message about how all the things in your life are incorporated into how you love in the present.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. I'd rather not say.

Whenever I hear anything by Abba (don't laugh) I think of the long car trips we used to take from Montreal, through the Adirondack mountains, to visit my favorite aunt and uncle in New York. The music was awful - especially when you were hearing it for the umpteenth time - but the memories are vivid and warm.

Visiting from Michele's this morning.

This is an easy one. Don't GIve Up by Peter Gabriel. Every time I feel like life is getting me down, I listen to this and it makes me feel stronger and more alive.

Here from Michele's.

Dancing Queen by Abba - during my turbulent childhood I went to Quaker Summer School at 14, which was the only place I wasn't bullied! While there, I won the summer disco competition (thank you, Pan's People!), was crowned 'Disco Queen' and got to dance with the school hunk to this very song :-) Felt a million dollars that night.......

Why Worry by Dire Straits - When I met MB I was in a very violent marriage. As we fell in love and I needed strength to leave the marital home, he wrote the lyrics on a little piece of paper to give me strength and self-confidence. I still have that little piece of paper over 20 years later :-)

I tried the Santa letter, it was pretty funny!

As far as a song goes, I was listening to "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You." I love that song. Why? I don't know.

Merry Christmas, Jean-Luc!

Some excellent choices so far! 'Dancing Queen' is my favourite Abba song, even more so after seeing 'Mamma Mia!' Also 'See My Baby Jive' by Wizzard reminds me of my teenage years. 'Fly Me To The Moon' will make me think of a certain party, as Ciera will confirm.

For those who haven't, try the 'Dear Santa' letter.Anyone can use it on their own blog, if they wish. I just happened to find it.

Greetings from Michele... one of my favourite songs is "Gentle on My Mind" by Dean Martin. It is one of the old classics that still holds today, while at the same time reminds me of the 60's when I was just a very little kid.

I'm not sure--I remember singing "I"ve been working on the railroad" on my great-granddaddy's porch when I was probably five (My first and last public solo, btw). As far as a hit song, maybe the Eagles "Desperado"

Chrixien, The Beatles' latter songs were always favourites.

Craziequeen, we might well be in the same age range. Wizzard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' was a great one from 1973.

one of my all-time favourite Christmas songs.....I was - erm - 9 when that was released... :-)
