TWQ: Background Blog Music

This week, TWQ (The Weekend Question) asks about the music in blogs:

What music would you like in the background to play as people viewed your blog? You can pick as many as you wish, but say what your first choice would be.

My answer is:

My first choice would be 'Space Oddity' by David Bowie (it starts 'Ground countrol to Major Tom...')

Other choices would by 'Starman' (also by David Bowie) and 'Rocket Man' by Elton John

Now it's over to you...

I'm afraid my answer is boring, Captain Picard. None. I'd not have any music on my page. Ever.

However if I was forced to choose something, your choice of Rocketman would be on my list. I love the eloquent workman like attitude underlaid with sadness that comes though that song. It reminds me of the Niven short stories about the Belters that have such solitary lives and only see their families now and then.

"I come from the land Down Under,
Where woman Blow and men Thunder..."

well, maybe not.. but anything by Yello would be cool for WindbagandThunder and some shakuhachi flute or Er Hu violin for Crackle Mountain.

I'm all caught up now with the Journal now :D

I love music and it often features on my blog. Experimentally, I have run a music track at startup, but only for a few hours because I know how irritating it can be as one swoops around the blogosphere. There are a few websites where I have to set the shields to High before I enter for that very reason.

So I won't have direct music on my site (except for brief fun) although there is usually a good selection of suggestions somewhere on my site.

Can I also suggest Ligeti's Lux Aeterna for your site - it has that spacey vibe which befits a Starfleet Commander and I think it would mae the pop charts in some Galaxies.

Best regards, as always!

Sent to you this time via Michele's. And like you said, no need for me to be sent over either; I always like to think you're just one skip over in the bloggosphere :)

Because of you post, I decided to listen to some Yello while I surf.

I really like David Bowie too.

I sometimes post music on my website, but its usually my own because I try to make mainly poppy dancey music just for fun.

Here is an example. Its called 'Earth'. Not really about spaceships, but the nearest I could think of to go with your space theme!

And hi - Michele sent me!

Not sure on this one. I don't really like blogs that have music playing automatically. I'm OK with music playing if you want to click on it and listen, but that auto play sort of just drives me nuts.

visiting from michele's this morning.

Becuase my blog is themed around film reviews, my choice would naturally have to be a song from a film soundtrack.

As it's possibly the most unique & unusual film soundtrack I've ever heard, I'm going to pick a song from the original version of 'The Wicker Man'.

I'm going to choose 'Willow's Song', which is what Britt Ekland's character sings & dances to, as she attempts to entice Edward Woodward's reluctant 'Christian copper' into her bedroom. It's a very haunting song which also features in the soundtrack to 'Hostel'. If you're after something a bit different, the complete 'Wicker Man' soundtrack CD is an essential purchase.

I love music, but I'm not a fan of it accompanying a blog, but if I had some it would be Moya Brennan (the lady from Clannad) Whisper to the Wild Water, or some soft Christian lullabys to God, or going the opposite direction some classic Led Zeppelin.

I find unsolicited music extremely annoying and intrusive, so I would never have some that automatically plays when the page is opened. However, if I were to list songs that go with the theme of my blog, top of the list would be the one by Crowded House: "Everyhere you go, you always take the weather with you." "Stormy Weather" would be another choice, as I love jazz, but the lyrics are less upbeat.

"Space Oddity" YES!! - THAT ONE! for you, el Capitano, i mean...

for me: "Piece of My Heart" - Janis Joplin....

oh and there's another one perhaps, i forgot the name, "...baby baby baby you're still the same..." crumbs i can't think of the words right now, "fold before the end of the game" ???...anyone?

"i come from the land from down under..." i love that one, i heard it last night just before i went to bed.

if any one needs instructions belizegail's daughter i believe can give them to you, but i don't know where her blog is yet.

"...Leila..you've got me on my knees, Leila...i'm begging darlin' please, don't you break my foolish heart..." on the radio now...I love the way the instramental kind of segways into a completely different tune, that long combinations of different musical instraments.
another one of the truly great songs!

Currently "Mad World - Gary Jules."

Usually, "Behind Blue Eyes - The Who"

Droid Slaying, "Days go By - Dirty Vegas" or "Steamline - Newton"

Capt. J.L. Picard, I have one for you, "The Picard Song - Dark Materia"

None. I don't want any. If I want to hear music I have it on and when I do - blog music interferes with it.

i have no idea how people do that to their blogs, i'm always surprised when i go to when and there is a song on it. mine would have to be the name of my blog, shake it like a polariod picture.

I was doing that until people found it annoying, and I was playing good music, like John Lee Hooker with Carlos Santana, Chic,--But I would do Sound and Vision by Bowie. That just kicks ass.

I vote no music as well -- but if you're still looking for something, how about Telestar by the Tornados?

Christine: I think it's awesome that you can actually make stuff like that. I'm jealous. I AM very good a killing Jedi tho :D

The question would be what music WOULDN'T I play. I am with others in that music that I cannot turn off is very annoying, so anything I added to my blog would have to have an "off" button. :D

But I have a very wide selection of music from classical to country and rap (not too much of the last two), but I always like to leave myself open to the experience. So there is no telling what I'm going to like.

Right now, I'm quite in love with "Strict Machine" by Goldfrapp -- you're hearing it now on those Verizon Chocolate commercials. :D

Too many to count, though right now on my 9/11 tribute there is an autoplay with a voice and Mannheim Steamroller's Silent Night playing in the background.

I prefer Rocket Man by Elton John.

Have a great Sunday!

I don't even know how to get music to play on my blog, but saying I did, and i was so inclined...

My first choice is a tie, either the music that plays in Excalibur when Arthur is running across the country to get Mordred (yes it has a name, no I don't know it, if I did I would own it) or "the Music of the Night" ala Phantom of the Opera.

That way, people would be tricked into thinking interesting things happen while reading my blog.

Other choices would include Space's Ballad of Tom Jones or just a nice Enya track.

yes i love musicals.

Lahdeedah said...

Hey,

does anyone happen to know the song with these words in it:

Earth to major john...
tell my wife i love her... blah blah blah
earth to major john we're losing you or something?

yeah it's not much, maybe it's not major john. it's about a guy out in space and I think he ends up stuck there forever

Nepharia said...

Major Tom by David Bowiw, and Major Tom by Peter Schilling. Completely separate songs, but similar words.

Music on a page is a little annoying sometimes, because you don't sit there and listen to the whole song.

So every visitor to you blog hears the same three notes at the beginning of the song, then click on by looking for something to jerk off to.

Just being honest.

Thanks!

I want to buy the song for my ipod, and couldn't figure out who sang it.

Captain, I would have a button on the side that would start a soundtrack of bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace." If you've ever heard a solo piper play this a funeral (especially a military one) then I'm sure you know how moving this music can be. Then, after "Amazing Grace" was over, it would segue into "The Marines' Hymn".

I thinkI prefer my blog silent - but if I have to have music, Louis Armstrong singing "It's a Wonderful World" springs to mind.
Of course I might well think of something else, given more time to think about it.
Here from Michele's.

Actually, Lahdeedah & darth Nephalia, 'Major Tom' is really the song 'Space Oddity' by David Bowie that I highlighted earlier.

I wouldn't have a song on my blog either, but it's a hypothetical question as to what people would choose if they had to. An Enya track is a good choice, such as the instrumental 'Watermark'.

People are Strange, by the Doors.

Karen said...

OK, mine would be "Hang On Little Tomato" by Pink Martini. Love those kids!

Michele sent me. Great question. And by the way, the MySpace generation can actually do that, which is pretty cool!

kenju said...

Hi, Jean-Luc! I think I prefer silence on blogs - so I can play my own music while I read - but if I had to pick something, it would be by Gershwin... Rhapsody in Blue or American in Paris.

"Theme from Harry's Game" by Clannad, followed by various Enya tracks, either instrumental, or the ones with soft vocals.

I don't have to think long about this, since I just answered it last night. A Little Good News (Anne Murray) but just to be aware of, not to autoload, (that's just irritating and alienating to readers).

Moogie said...

I'm not really sure as I've not thought about it. I like the idea of being able to click on it if you want to hear it, but not to autoload. I'll have to see if I can find a song that would go well with my blog.

Oh, and Michele says hi!

Welsh Jenny often has The Corrs playing, http://www.jennytc.blogspot.com/, but the video doesn't seem to be there today.

jsdaughter said...

I'm not savvy about those things so my blog is plain and silent.. but this month the song I'd choose is easy..
'Wake Me Up When September Ends'..

bluesphee said...

Great question.

I'd have "Communications Breakdown" by Led Zeppelin playing.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't put one up. In fact I haven't put one up because I find that stuff annoying. Maybe one that didn't default to play but rather made you hit play if you wanted to listen. If that were the case I suppose I'd have to change it with my moods. Today I suppose it would be Don McLeans' American Pie. Feeling a wee bit nostalgic.

Whoops, and Michele says hi.

I think you should use the William Shatner version of "Rocket Man." We love that one around here.

I don't know what music I'd like to play in the background. I'd have to think about it...

Great choices everyone; I think we all like our blogs to be quiet, though.

It depends on the post I have up for the day (okay, sometimes hour.)

Meow (aka Connie) said...

Wll, Captain, as you know, my blog isn't quiet LOL, and has the really annoying "What's New Pussycat" playing ... but there is a stop button, to turn if off !!
Some great choices out there !!
Have a great week.
Take care, Meow
