TWQ: Childhood Ambitions

The Weekend Question (TWQ) asks you to look back and remember your ambitions.

When you were very young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
How did that change as you grew up?
Have you managed to achieve any of it?

I always wanted to be a writer when I was young; I wrote little stories, especially when I was in primary school. Sci fi film stories, comic books and Star Trek were a great influence on my imagination.

This was negated when I entered the primary school stage, as I had 'serious' studies to do.

When the internet arrived, my imagination was rekindled. I have a poetry website in which I have written a few. Also, this blog is a great creative outlet.

Now it's over to you...

I too wanted to write. I started studying Journalism in college, but then there was a familyy and to be honest I didn't really try that hard to persue it.

Bonjour, Jean-Luc! When I was young, I wanted to work in advertising and work in an office. I managed to do both. I've been very, very fortunate.

Oh yeah, Michele sent me....

Once when I was younger, I wanted to be a stuntman. We were visiting my father's childhood friend and when I told him of my career ambitions he said to me "Always have a plan B."

when I was in 6th grade I wanted to become a stewardess to travel around the world. I haven't traveled around the world but I have visited places and now I know transatlantic flights are all but fun and they are tirening. In my teens I wanted to be an architect, only to realize I didn't have the qualities of concentrated and precise work to become a good one. So I became an economist. And because of an expat experience which should have lasted 3-5 years I stayed at home. It's been 12 years now as an expat. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Hello, Michele sent me.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a teacher. As I got older, I wanted to be a writer. But as an adult, I am neither.

I wanted to sing and dance on Broadway. The problem is that I am not good at either. So, now I am a nurse.

I always had a feeling I'd end up writing. It was something that I just did...and everyone who read my work thought I did it well. I thought it would be cool to do work that didn't really seem like work, and that made others smile and think.

I got my wish!

Hmmm.... I wanted to be a Mom. Not any Mom, but a stay-at-home-and-spend-time-with-my-kids kind of Mom. As I have 4 kids with one on the way, and a home schooler to bot, I would say I achieved it! And don't laugh - it's a noble, hard working profession! :0)

I was one of those kids who changed their mind about who they wanted to be every day. I wanted to be an artist, writer, teacher, policewoman, hairstylist, pilot, actress, etc. Even when I got into high school I couldn't decided since each one of my teachers told me to do something different (my science teacher wanted me to go into engineering, my math teacher wanted me to study math and maybe teach it). Through all that I always knew that I wanted to get married and have children...so it all worked out since I'm a sahm. I love it and couldn't be happier!

When I was about 5, I wanted to be a singer. One problem - I've been told that I can't sing. When I hit fourth grade, I knew that I knew what I wanted to be - a writer. For a while, I wanted to be a writer and an actress, but you really kind of sort of have to be pretty to be an actress on the big screen, so now I settle for amusing the kids on the bus with my funny voices. Still have hopes of being a published author someday. I mean, I have a finished novel...I just have to send it out! Of course, there's always the blog. :)

I wanted to be an astronaut, but that hasn't worked out. I'm a stay at home mom and home educator, which is actually pretty cool on it's own. :-) It's all good.

I wanted to be a physician until HMO's came into the world. Then I didn't want to practice under such a servile system.

My dream was and always has been the same. To be a mother. I never wanted to be anything else, even growing up. Now I am a mother to the most precious little girl who is my true miracle, and a wonderful handful at 4. So I can say, yes, I have achieved my dream in every way.

I wanted to be an elementary school teacher - that's what my college degree is in. So now I work in human resources and I get to deal with adults who act like children.

I wanted to be an artist. I went to SJSU and earned a BA in Art. I was a Multimedia Illustrator in the Army. Now, I'm writing fantasy and drawing the characters. I think my dream is coming true.

I wanted to be an English teacher and a writer OR a studio singer doing commercial jingles .
I did a lot of singing over many years, but I haven't worked for nearly five years now. I'm a mom, and I love being a mom.

Great answers so far!

Many of you have achieved your ambition, especially those who wanted to be mothers. It's a great target to aim for.

So many take diversions along the way and with hindsight are supprised how they end up!

Minerva, have faith. You will overcome your willness and write that book. I, and so many friends are behind you.

Jersey, a lovely answer from you.

Ciera, good luck with that finished novel.

Haris, my e mail address is in the 'secure channel' section of the blogpage.

Thanks for popping over to my site...

When I was young I wanted to be an actress, desperately. I loved to perform in front of family and friends. It wasn't until my first audtion in the stage play of Annie that I decided that I didn't want to be an actress afterall. Singing really isn't my thing...

I wanted to be an FBI Agent (ha!) and also, because I was a Mad Magazine fanatic, a cartoonist ala Don Martin.

Alas, I am neither... ;)

Here via michele (sorry for the delay in commenting, but when a dog's gotta go...a dog's gotta go!)

Hmmmm..... I think as a youngster I wanted to be a Historian: not really realising that that isn't exactly the most straight-forward of 'going to the job centre' type jobs. I later wanted to be a lawyer (much to my Mother's delight), but was put off by the thought of defending/failing to convict the guilty.

At the age of 15 I decided I wanted to become a psychologist, which is sort of what I'm doing now. It largely bores me, the only perk of late being my new role as a 'teacher'. Perhaps this is where the future lies? *gulp*

I followed your trail from Michelle's place. I feel rewarded.

hello michele sent me.
I can't remember what I wanted to be when I was real young, but I remember not wanting to be a Welder like my father.
At 15 I thought I wanted to be an Air Traffic Controller until I found I wasn't good at physics. Then I discovered Accounting and Computers and ended up with half an Accounting degree and a complete Computer Science degree.

Astronaut, Spy and Race car driver.

My dreams take me out to the stars, I spy my children growing up too fast, and I drive a minivan like it's a much smaller, faster car (the cops don't usually watch minivans, they watch the red sports cars!)

I wanted to be a teacher. I taught for 34 years before retiring. Would that qualify me as goal oriented?

Came by way of Michele

I went through about 400 careers that I wanted to have when I grew up... writer, librarian, teacher, psychologist, FBI agent (I loved the X-Files!), actress, ballerina... I could go on for ages. Now I'm a personnelist in the AF, I get my writing fix from blogging and a short story here and there, and my ultimate goal is to one day be a sahm :)

Oops, and here from Michele's!

Hi, Michele sent me. I always wanted to be an actress...HOLLYWOOD! In high school I decided I wanted to be a Social Worker. I managed to get three years of college, but never graduated (had a baby instead). It's one of my biggest regrets. *sigh* Someday...I still have hope of being a "bachlorette"!

I also have the same ambitions as you JLP. I also have a poetry blog AND a story site. Good luck in those ambitions!

Hi from Michele!

I wanted to become a lawyer, and I did. Now that I have, I want to be something else, like a writer or conductor of a symphony orchestra.

I can also remember taking a test in middle school when they asked what jobs you felt were 'important.' The word important was not clearly defined, and I took it literally. It turned out, I was pegged to become a crossing guard! But probably there was a lawyer there, since I was arguing the definitions of words already.

You really DO have a talent with your writing, I have to say. It's never a dull visit when we drop by here.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a Vet. That got warped into being a teacher and then by the time High School ended I hadn't the faintest what I wanted to do. Still don't! But I am enjoying being a mom and that's fulfilled my life more than I ever thought possible.

Well, I forgot that I ever wanted to be a comedy writer until I was looking at my old journals for some excerpts for my blog. So it was a pleasant surprise to remember. I find it fun to go back to that time and not be afraid to be different.

I was told that from the moment I could pick up anything that made a mark, I would automatically make marks and attempt to draw.
I was the only artist in the family, and I was easy to keep amused as a child.
As long as I had paper and pencils, I was a quiet happy bunny.
My mother encouraged me.
I have now never known anything else.
My mother should have beat it out of me!

If I come back in another life, I hope to do something sensible and financially rewarding!!!!
...Although, I`m not sure what yet...!!

Brilliant answers here! FBI Agent, spy, symphony conductor, astronaut, cartoonist..we have such vivid and imaginative ideas; just remember that there are people who ARE doing these things, so there is no reason to have a high ambition.

Ouch!....cartoonist...was that me?

And you are writing sci-fi. How great.

Me? I wanted to be an actress and writer, and about 10 other things, including a nun AND mother.
