TWQ: Axed Too Soon?

This week, TWQ (The Weekend Question) asks about certain tv shows:

What tv shows did you think were axed too early, when they still had so much promise in them?

My answers are:

Flamingo Road: This was a glossy series that ran around the time of Dallas & Dynasty, but was exclipsed by them, and ran for only two seasons. It ended on a cliffhanger, and never came back.

Land Of The Giants: Another series axed after two seasons, which never ended properly with the 'little people' finding their way back home. By the way, does anyone know why Betty was in it less and less during the end?

The Trials Of Rosie O'Neill: This fine series ran for a couple of seasons, and followed 'Cagney & Lacey' for Sharon Gless.

Now it's over to you...

"My So-Called Life" only last 19 episodes here in the U.S. I LOVED that show. I watch the DVDs still.

*sigh*

Homicide: Life in the Streets. Loved that show. I also miss "thirtysomething" like crazy, and it's not even on DVD!!!

I'm not sure but there are several I wish were still on - I can only handle so many re-runs.

Everybody Loves Raymond is one! For sure.

i used to watch flamigo road too, loved it. i miss seinfeld, i wish there were new episodes, i think they could come back today and do several more seasons, easily.

I'm hopeless at watching anything continuously, so most shows have spare episodes for me to see.

My answer would be the Joss Whedon show Firefly. That was gone WAAAAY too soon.

I never watched much TV, and none at all now, but the shows I really regretted saying goodbye to were M*A*S*H and St. Elsewhere. They did run just about forever, though.

Legend with Richard Dean Anderson and Firefly! I miss them both...but if Legend hadn't been axed Stargate: SG-1 might not have been as great.

I meantioned you in my latest post. It is all your fault you know...Trekkie! You'll have to visit to see what I mean.

seinfeld for sure.

although since it ran for so long i guess you wouldn't really say it was axed "early".

Sorry but I don't watch that much tv. But I heard that these programs were good and it's sad that they didn't last long on air.

Have a fun-filled day.

Firefly wasn't shown in Britain, but I heard it was axed too early. A lot of you seem to think so.

I still bemoan the canning of Brimstone after only one season or so.....

Peter Horton in tattoos! :-)

These days a lot of TV is scrapped early on, depending on the first season ratings. A mistake by the American TV companies (and more recently British companies), as we viewers can usually see potential....but a viewer has to get to know their programme..c

Good morning Captain. Sorry, can't help you, I watch so little TV and really no commerical TV except for CNN or ESPN at the gym. But I do think I would have liked to have seen more of the original Star Trek shows.

They took the British version of The Office off air here in AU. It was a travesty. Then for an additional slap in the face, they started showing the American version. An American version-think about that....so wrong on a variety of levels. I can't even bring myself to watch it :)

In New Zealand they "axe" shows even earlier by moving the good ones to a ridiculous hour of night. I'd like to see more of "Monk" (which was moved to Thursday afternoon at 1 pm) or "The West Wing" (midnight on a Sunday or something similar). I keep forgetting to record them.

There was a show called Cupid with jeremy Piven on a few years ago. He plays a mental patient who may or may not be the god Cupid. The show was a little bit cheesey but I thought the actors were very interesting and I was curious about the underlying plot. It got axed due to low ratings.

The biggest injustice would have to be Enterprise, though. That show was really coming into it's own in the last season. I was liking the darker edge and I thought that the Mirror Universe stories were great. It's really too bad it ended, especially with such a whimper.

Good morning, Captain Picard, from Michele's--though it's not morning on your side of the big Pond.

Of the three shows you name, I only saw Land of the Giants can can't remember anything about it. :-(

The first show that comes to my mind for early axing that I liked is "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" It starred Blair Brown as a 30-something single woman in NYC. I think it was on network tv for just 1987 but had a few more years of attenuated life on cable before it died. I didn't have cable at the time so I only saw the first season.

Hi..from Michele's.
Hmmm, lets see...I miss St. Elsewhere, Peyton Place (loved that show!) and Cheers.

I thought of one. I really liked 'Black Books' which had three series ; 18 episodes. A mere infant of a show compared with most of the ones listed here.

And this time, Michele sent me.

Hello, Michele sent me.

I loved A Day in the Life, which only lasted maybe one season. And I was very disappointed that the last incarnation of Law and Order was cancelled so quickly. I think it was called Trial by Jury.

Ok, I know that there have been some that I have thought... just one more season to wrap it up... but do you think I could think of them now??

Stopping by via Michele this morning!!

Dark angel !! Just like watchin her !

Jean-Luc Picard said...

Some much missed shows there; I agree with the Professor. The two part 'Through A Mirror Darkly' from Enterprise was a wonderful story.

Jen said...

I would have liked to have seen more of Threshhold, it was slow getting started, but it seemed like it might shape up to be an interesting series.

Bill said...

You stole my answer, Jabafatboy!

Not only did they cancel Dark Angel, they never filmed a follow-up to the last episode, which was a complete cliff-hanger!
