TWQ: Literary Character Best Friends

This week's TWQ asks you to think about which fictional friends you would like.

Which fictional book characters would you like as a best friend? Think of a reason, and list as many as you wish.

My answers are:

Galadrial (from Lord Of The Rings). She is so wise, knowledgeable and epherial, Galadrial would be good for dispensing advice

Wanderer/Melanie Stryder (from Stephenie Meyer's The Host). I'm reading this book right now. Wanderer is an alien who has inhabited Melanie's body, but both have active minds. I would get two friends for one body! They would give such different replies.

Now it's over to you...

Elizabeth Bennett of 'Pride and Prejudice' because she is staunch and level headed and it would be the next best thing to having Jane Austen for a friend.
From Kipling's story: Rikki-Tiki-Tavi the brave mongoose who defeats evil ...
He would protect me from all nasties
both crawlies and humans.

I would pick Merry and Pippin from The Lord of The Rings some time after their adventures in the books were done. It would be wonderful to sit around a tavern with them, enjoy a fine mug of beer and hear all the stories of their adventures.

HA. Not Angela Landsbury, good one!

I would pick Edward from Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (writer of The Host) because who couldn't use an uber-powerful vampire friend that won't eat you now and again? Plus, he's got old-world manners and charm.

I would also go back to my teen years and pick Raistlin, from those old D&D books, because who couldn't use a powerful mage, and nevermind he's sorta kinda evil....

But, I'd also pick Merlin from T.H. White's Once Upon a Future King, because he was an excellent teacher and I'd love to learn the way 'Wart' did.

I'd pick Odd Thomas, from Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas books, because he's so simple and honest and interesting (plus he hangs with the ghost of Elvis).

And now I realize I need some chick friends, you know, to shop with.
Oh dear, I'll have to get back to you on that.

I wouldn't mind having around the house a couple of the green girls from Slave Girls of Orion.

I think I'd pick Sherlock Holmes, because I could learn so much about deduction from him, and life would never be dull. And while Galadriel from the Lord of the Rings would be interesting, I think I'd prefer Eowyn of Rohan, because she was brave and loving enough to face down the Witch King in defense of Theoden when it looked like the ultimate hopeless act.

I think I'd love to have Agatha Christies Miss Jane Marple as a friend, lovely to sit and chat with her and knit along.

At the other end of the spectrum, I think J K Rowlings Hermione Granger, and Molly Weasley. Hermione as she's such a bright girl, and she'd be able to teach me all the wizarding stuff. Molly on day to day wizarding stuff, especially help in the kitchen!

I pick Erik, aka the Phantom Of The Opera, because he needed a best friend.

I'll agree with the first poster here on Elizabeth Bennet. A great character with fabulous wit and the ability to attract rich men against their will. What else could you ask for?

I would like to hang out with the Free Zone Committee from Stephen King's The Stand. They just seemed like such an honest, capable and genuinely nice group of people. :-)

I've been busy lately, but I'm trying to catch up with people.

I love your choices! Such imagination. Bilbo, I had considered adding Sherlock Holmes (or possibly Dr Watson). I do agree about Eowyn. I liked her in the film. She was really tough!

Mike, you may have to buy a lot of beer for Merry & Pippin to listen to them.

Bee & Lahdeedah, you're right about Angela Lansbury!

Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin from Madeline L'Engles books. Mostly just because they sound like they would be good friends to have.

Michele sent me.

Hmmm ... I would choose Bridget Jones from "Bridget Jones' Diary" as she and I have a lot in common and she seems like she would be a lot of fun to hang out with.

Stephanie Plum from Janet Evanovich's series of books of the character with the same name as she gets into the wildest of adventures and she eats when she gets stressed! Plus she gets into the wildest of adventures!

Q. No explanation needed. :D

Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan. If I ever got in real trouble, they'd rescue me.

Susan from any of the Discworld novels by Pratchett. Cause she is Death's granddaughter and takes no nonsense from anyone.

I agree with Linda -- Bridget & Stephanie would be fun friends. I posted earlier, but it didn't take at that time all I could think of were childrens' book characters Poppleton and Cherry Sue and their friends from the Poppleton series. They eat lots of desserts, go to the shore, lie out under the stars, go sailing, throw birthday parties for each other and go on horse-drawn sleigh rides at midnight. Good times. I also thought of Mole and Rat from Wind in the Willows. Really charming question, I thought, Jean-Luc!

I'll pick the fairy godmother from Cinderella. Obvious, isn't it?

It's interesting to see just how permeant virtual memory has become in our lives. It seems like everytime I turn my head, I see something with a card slot or USB port . I guess it makes sense though, considering how much cheaper memory has become lately...

Gahhhhh... I shouldn't be moaning and groaning. I can't get through a day without my R4 / R4i!
