Nothing comes to mind right now, but the reason all of these loves are unfulfilled is that the shows usually tank as soon as the two characters get together. There's a certain tension in the anticipation that's completely lost as soon as they become a couple.

Hi, I agree with Carmi. It's the angst element that makes for a good story, the characters can only ever get together for a happy ending.

After five years together, Regis and Kelly are really starting to give off heat. In this case, familiarity seems to be breeding romance!
My favourite is definitely Dr Zhivago, I also like Gone with the Wind and Brief Encounters. They all have sad endings though.
