TWQ: Newspaper Cartoons

This weekend, TWQ (The Weekend Question) looks at newspaper cartoons:

Which newspaper cartoons are your favourites and why?

Here are my answers:

Despite being British, I have always found that American newspaper cartoons are more my sort. They are sharper, with good humour and drama. I have imported daily desk calendars for Dilbert and The New Yorker; the former is in my office, and the latter is next to my computer. Dilbert reflects often how life is in my office, while the sheer variety of cartoons in The New Yorker make them a must.

Now it's over to you...

I must admit to being of the never read newspapers variety of people. When I was very small I used to like "The Broons" and "Oor Willie" which came with some Scottish paper on Sundays.. but that was a long time ago when I was very young.

Now I like "Mutts" and I read For "Better or For Worse." and sometimes some of the on line gamer ones...there are links to both on my real world blog.Mutts had a nice way of saying gee wouldn't it be great if the world was a nicer place... and FBOFW is a story line that my whole family has followed since I don't know when...

I honestly do not recall the last time I actually held newspaper in my hands. I really dislike the smell of newpapers though, they make me sneeze. :)

and truth be told... I often don't find most cartoons funny. My peculiar sense of humour just doesn't work that way, I guess.

My favourite comic is Private Eye. I subscribe and like their daft and their cutting cartoons.

Doonesbury, of course, followed by Dilbert and Zits.

For Better or for Worse...it's a real-world depiction of a real family that could just as easily be us. I feel as if I could welcome the characters into my home.

Great writing....its creator is something of a national institution here in Canada. And for good reason.

I almost forgot: The Far Side. I know it's been years since Gary Larson penned any new ones. But reading his older material, it's clear that their humor does not degrade with time. He's a true genius.

I agree with Carmi, Gary Larson still splits my sides.

Though, when I was young, I totally got into Snoopy, I have know idea why. I had Snoopy toys and books, even a Snoopy ring that I traded with a girl down the road for. I also liked his cousin Spike who wore a teabag in his hat, for some reason?

My favorite cartoon is The Non Sequitur and my favorite is the little girl Danae. She has a grip on reality that no one seems to listen to.

And Bob the Angry Flower. He cracks me the heck up!!!

Those are my favorites!

I like Andy Capp and he's British. Hagar and BC are also quite funny.

Dilbert. Dilbert is office life. It's great.

Doonesbury.

...and I can't remember, but the one with Opus....

I absolutely have loved Garfield comics ever since toddler-hood. I also like Zits and Luann, for the teen-theme coming-of-age humour. Rose is Rose is also awesome for the tongue-in-cheek adult humour. THose are the comics I most frequent.

Chris W. said...

Lahdeedah, the one with Opus is called Opus... it used to be "Outland" and before that it was "Bloom County". I forgot to mention that one! I loved all three incarnations, mainly for the political humour. So many jabs at Bush!!! :D

dddragon said...

I like Mutts and Zits. The latter especially since I've got two teenagers.

After reading everyone else's lists, For Better or Worse would be my next choice. And I forgot about several others ... good thing you said only two. My list would get much longer.

my vote definitely goes to garfield. why? love his sense of humour.

Peanuts, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus and his blanket - complete class.

I like Pearls Before Swine, it fits my somewhat "different" sense of humor. And 9 Chickweed Lane and For Better or For Worse would probably tie for second.

There's a few I haven't heard of there, though I have seen Doonesbury, For Better Or Worse, & BC. I agree; The Far Side was the best. It was my sense of humour. Snoopy's relatives and his fantasy leanimgs made me laugh, as did Linus' attempts to see the Great Pumpkin.

Get Fuzzy, Dilbert and actualy any political cartoon art. Though I agree that I resonate with the wit in North American cartoons. On the flip side I have always love the British style of comedy.

Michele says hello.

cheers,

I love the comics in french. I can't think of the name right now because I haven't read or seen them in about 3 years. They come in books and are wonderful. Adults in Switzerland love to read em.

Hey! Happy Birthday to the official Capt. Picard! Did no one know? ;0)

(Yes, I am that damned good)

P.S. I love "The Other Side".

Oh man, Dilbert is perfect for me right now. I have the STUPIDEST boss on the planet and I can always find a good Dilbert to describe exactly what's going on in my office at any given time.

I love The New Yorker, too. Do you ever play the Caption Contest?

Jaime H. said...

My favorites are:

Dilbert
Calvin & Hobbes
Rhymes With Orange
Pearls Before Swine

They all have a biting wit. I used to live Dilbert when I worked in a law firm, and C&H is just hilarious!!!

Jean-Luc Picard said...

Tanda, I should have known about the birthday!

Panthergirl, I did look at the Caption Contest recently. I may have a go at it.

The Far Side, Calvin & Hobbs & For Better & Worse see to be the big winners.

I think Garfield's the only one I bother with on a regular basis, although if I pick up a newspaper I'll read most all of them, and Abby and Heloise besides.

Jen said...

Definitely Dilbert. I miss Calvin and Hobbes, and The Far Side, too. :-(

Blozor said...

Currently Dilbert and Get Fuzzy. Get Fuzzy is a really smart comic strip; you should look into it.

Former are Calvin, Far Side, and one called Liberty Meadows. Liberty Meadows pulled out of syndication and is now being published in collections under Image Comics. Frank Cho, the creator, is incredibly funny and a gifted artist. It alternates between adult drama between the two main characters and cartoonish humor with the various animals and supporting cast. I invite you to look into that one; it's one of the best I've seen.
