TWQ: Your Ten Top Songs

This weekend, the flavour is very musical, as I ask:

What are your top ten all time favourite songs and by whom? Can you say why?

Here are my choices:

1: Hey Jude by The Beatles: Strictly the version sung by them in 1968, and not any pop concert covers. A great classic.

2: American Pie by Don McLean: Only the full 8 min 27 seconds version here. Have you worked out all the meanings? Do you know all the words? Easily the best to hum along with.

3: Whisky In The Jar by Thin Lizzy: Put the volume up high for this one. It's the best for all those who wanted to air guitar. Brilliant.

4: Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers: The perfect summer record to play in the warm sunshine.

5: Dancing Queen by Abba: Their best record that gets me singing it long after. It was a pleasure to hear it in the stage show 'Mamma Mia!'.

6: San Francisco by Scott McKenzie: What can I say? A perfect record.

7: A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procul Harum: Voted by many as the best record of the 1960's.

8: Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman: A wonderful song; just right.

9: Something by The Beatles: A great song often imitated, never bettered.

10: Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler: This tearjerker from 'Beaches' is beautifully sung.

Now it's over to you....

Wow, top 10 songs of all time... this is going to require a little thought.

Off the top of my head, and in no particular order, I can always listen to:
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Riders on the Storm - The Doors
Bat Out of Hell - Meat Loaf
Touch Too Much - AC/DC
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Thank You - Dido
One - U2
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Gimme all Your Lovin' - ZZ Top

I think that pretty much outlines my musical tastes!

Here via Michele's today.

TOP ten?? Gawd...there's no way I can reduce it to ten. It would have to at least be by theme... love songs, sex songs, driving songs, summer songs, etc.

Right now, I'm listening to "Squeeze, 45 and under" which has at least 10 songs and they are all favorites. ;)

Here via michele today!

I can name a few...but would have to think more to come up with 10.
1. Respect by Aretha Franklin
2. I Can Drink A Case of You by Joni Mitchell
3. I am a Child by Neil Young
4. Come on People/Smile on your Brother by the Youngbloods
5. Higher Love by Steve Winwood
I'm half way there! Michle sent me over.

1.American Pie by Don McLean (only!) - fun to sing along, and so full of 'alleged' meaning.
2. 30,0000 Pounds of Bananas by Harry Chapin - weirdly funny, and took place in my state of Pennsylvania.
3. Holding Out for a Hero by both Frou Frou and Jennifer Saunders -it's unusual for me to like two versions of a song. The romantic in me likes this song.
4. Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis – Elvis was part of the background of my childhood, I like most of his songs.
5. Take on Me by Aha – I’m influenced by the video they released with this song. I was an animation film student at the time and liked it.
6. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen - doesn't everybody like to sing (loudly) along with this?

Now my head is full of songs that are rolling around, competing for attention. ELO, REO, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffet, Beach Boys, Paul Simon, anything from the year 1972, lots from the 80s … I need to dig out my LPs now! I guess that each stage of my life has had its favorite set of songs. Each one brings up different memories and feelings.

WOW, what a leading question! Good one, Captain!

I hope you don't mind I added you to my site. Always a TNG fan.

This one's too hard for me. I love so much music that, well, I could only narrow it down to favorite albums of all time. Visit my blog and profile and you'll see what I mean! My top albums would probably have Rush's "Moving Pictures" at the top, with the last (10th) one being "Reckoning Night" by Sonata Arctica.

I would find it difficult to limit myself to ten. I've got such bizarre, eclectic taste in music that such a list would likely scare anybody away.

Saw your link on Michele's and just had to come on over and say hi.

What a great list. I am not sure I could narrow my favorites down to 10, but I just might try after reading this post.

Michele sent me! :)

Jean-Luc: I was by this post before and didn't comment because there is no way I can come up with just 10 songs. And I if I did, I bet my list would change tomorrow. A lot depends on the mood I am in. I must say I like your list though. Michele sent me by this time.

Top 10??? Can't do it... It's hard to squeeze my taste of the moment down to favorites....

I so can't narrow it down to ten b/c I love music entirely too much, but I'll try and in no particular order

* Fields of Innocence by Evanescence - I can relate, so well
* Simple Gifts (old Shaker tune - 'tis a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free...) - truer words were never sung
* Poet and Peasant Overture by Franz von Suppé (you know, the one from the old school Bugs Bunny cartoons) - I just really like Poet and Peasant Overture
* Video by India Arie - b/c sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don't...but I still love myself unconditionally
* The theme from Star Wars - it's just cool
* No Scrubs by TLC - listen to the lyrics, ...just listen to the lyrics
* Walk Like an Egyptian - I still walk like an Egyptian :D
* Nature Boy by Nat 'King' Cole - that song contains some valuable life lessons
* My Love Will Go On by Celine Dion - b/c Titanic made me cry

Well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head, and coming up with that list took way too much time LOL

P.S. Michele says hello

There is absolutely NO WAY I could narrow down my list to 10 songs! I’m a musician after all! If I’m in a classical mood, then it would have to be Beethoven’s 7th Symphony… ALL OF IT! Lol

I really couldn’t narrow down my favorites from U2. And now that I’m finishing up MY new CD this week, I would have to put my own music right up there in the top ten! (If I don’t love it, who else will?)

Michele sent me this time, but I always enjoy my visits! Come by and say hi when you get a chance. I’m posting my new movie tomorrow!

I will give you ten songs that I adore, but if you asked me again tomorrow, I can't guarantee you'd get the same ten!

1. Moon River (Andy Williams' version is the classic, but I love Raul Malo's just as much)
2. Angel from Montgomery (Bonnie Raitt, especially with John Prine)
3. If I Had a Boat (Lyle Lovett)
4. Til I Can Gain Control Again (written by Rodney Crowell; his version is great and so are Willie Nelson's and Emmylou Harris's)
5. That's the Way Love Goes (Merle Haggard)
6. Into the Mystic (Van Morrison)
7. The Moon and St. Christopher (Mary Chapin Carpenter)
8. Hickory Wind-Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris
9. Nowhere Road-Steve Earle
10. A Thousand Miles from Nowhere (Dwight Yoakam)

Hi! Michele sent me! I don't think I can narrow it down to 10, but here's some.
Imagine -John Lennon
People Are Strange - The Doors
Do Right Women - Aretha Franklin
Piece of My Heart- Janis Joplin
Girls on Film -Duran Duran
I know the last one seems out of place, but, I'm a child of the 80's not the 60's.

It's a tough job to pick just 10. I know I did too. Sometimes they change week by week.

You all have wide, interssting tastes. Some of your choices are ones I'll play over and over. Julia Fordham, Harry Chapin (especially W.O,L.D.), Mary Chapin Carpenter, Elvis, John Lennon, Janis Joplin.

I wish I could do a list for you but that would take too many brain cells right now. If it could even be done...I'm all about music and can't see narrowing it down so far :) Oh well...I'll still think about it!
