TWQ: First Remembered News Event

We all remember those great news events that have occured throughout our lives. TWQ (The Weekend Question) asks you about the first.

Which is the first great news event that you can remember? What else was going on then?

My answer is:

It seems I was largely oblivious to many of the great headlines that appeared in the sixties. However, everybody was talking of the Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969. I also recall not long after, the world watching as the crew of Apollo 13 struggled to get home. The papers always seemed full of people called 'hippies' as well.

Now it's over to you...

Hi Jean-Luc,

Came here from Tanya's this morning (before heading back to bed!).

First news I rememeber? I don't have a lot of memories from my childhood, mostly blacked out. But I do remember the winter of discontent in the 70's - rubbish in the streets, everyone on strike, power cuts etc.

i have two, one is "i like ike" when eisenhower ran for president and the other is "vaccination for polio". that was certainly a major event at the time. people were so afraid of polio i remember my mother telling me not to step in a puddle because i might catch it! horrible.

Ugh! Yes, my father forced me to watch the 1968 lunar landing (as boring as I thought it was at the time) "because," he said, "it is history."

Hi Captain. Visiting from Tanya's on this beautiful spring weekend!

I have pictures of myself on the beach the day Apollo 11 touched down on the moon. I was only 2 at the time, so I don't remember. But I DO remember the Yom Kippur War in 1973. I remember my parents telling me about it, and I looked up in the sky and saw the contrails of passenger jets overhead. I thought they were dogfighting fighters, and hoped that my house wouldn't be bombed.

Honestly, I think it was the day Elvis Presley died. I must not have watched much tv as a young 'un.

Like the others who have commented, it seems easier to remember those who have died rather than the happy events. Does the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana count as a happy event?

Reagan's assassination attempt and Charles and Diana's wedding.

I believe that my first remembered news event was President Reagan getting shot. I was in the library and I had to get a key to use the facilities; one of the neighbor girls said Reagan was shot and I thought she said someone was shot in the library, hence the enhanced security of locking the lavatories.

Events are events, whether they arr good or bad. It's what we remember most.

I've been so busy with school, I haven't visited in a while.

My first news memory was Reagan's victory over Carter.
