TWQ: First Computer Forays

This week, TWQ (The Weekend Question) takes you back to that time you had your first computer.

What did you do when you had your first internet computer? How did you get in touch with people and make new friends? What sort of website did you set up?

My answers are:

My first computer that was connected to the internet was in September 1999. I felt very alone going into a place where no one knew me. I set up a website of Epic & Romantic Poetry, which combined classic poems, plus new ones that I had written. I started getting a few friends, many of which are still friends now. In April 2005, I changed to the blog that I have now.

Now it's over to you...

But before I go...

Listen to this fabulous video of Concha Buika, a wonderful Spanish singer who I discovered on the internet. Her music is a kind of afro-spanish flamenco jazz fusion. It doesn't matter that she sings in spanish, the passion of her singing is absolutely fantastic. Get your speakers ready to hear her singing 'Mi Nina Lola'.

i'm really technically challenged, we've had a computer for many years but i don't know how to do anything and rely on anyone to help me. my kids are now at the age where they just roll their eyes as me when i ask for help and my husband knows less then i do, but i do just get trying, but really have no idea what i'm doing or how any of this works.

Our very first "computer" was a Timex sinclair that was just a small step up from a calculator. I think the first internet capable computer we had was a Commodore. We used Progidy on dial up to go online and thought it was wonderful. Of course Commander Spock would say it was "bear skins and stone knives" compared to what we have today.

Well I didn't know you liked Buika so much as to post another video! That's great, I hope your readers enjoy her too. My first internet connected computer was in 1993. I just used it to send stories to my editors and browse a few sites but I didn't truly start connecting until I joined Facebook, Linked In Twitter and started blogging. It's a truly different world!

An Excellent Post with a little Bossa Nova in contrast to my Telly Savales post. Needless to say Cocha is terrific. I was dragged icking and screaming into the computer age in the mid 1990's when I was in management. Like you, I was slowly introduced to Blogging and I must say, I miss many who shut down their sites. You are among the loyal friends I really appreciate Jean-Luc!

I love this song, it's my kind of music, it sent shivers down my spine. I think I will buy it from itunes.

I bought my first computer as an alternative to a fax when I started a new job. I guess it was used for work more than friends at first. I can't imagine living without it now.

Thank you for your continued support during my hectic days when I have little time for visiting sites. I'm starting on a new job next week which you will hear about soon, and will give me even less time.
I'm now off to itunes.

I bought my first computer in the mid-90s. It was a Compaq Pressario. The thing was enormous. I mostly just emailed in terms of the internet at home.

Concha's voice is enchanting. Thanks for the listen!

I had a computer way back in the 1980's as well when the amount of memory was so small it wouldn't power a light bulb. The question was really about when going into the internet.

Glad I've made so many friends, and that you liked Concha Buika as much as I did.

The first computer that was really mine was an Atari 1040ST. I loved that machine, and it saw me through university and into my first job.

I remember my first halting experiences with the Internet, browsing on the text-based Lynx browser and freaking out - in a good way - every time I connected to a server in some faraway country. It was magic then, and it still is now, as it shrinks distance and connects the people who matter most.

Visiting from Tanya's today, and I wanted to thank you for prompting such happy memories.

I got my internet connection in 2001. Though via school and my brother I already gotten on the internet. In the beginning my internet experiences only went as far as research for school and later university. I wasn't that interested in more. The people I got in touch with were mainly my friends and family. Only in the last couple of years I got in touch with people outside my direct surroundings via internet. Through blogging. In 2006 I started a blog after my brothers talked about it...

I think I only discovered the internet when I went back into adult education, an art and design course.

By the time I'd done my degree I'd made some lovely friends on a Christian forum for ladies, which led to some of us going away for a weekend together.

I started blogging to stay sane in the last hectic few weeks of my degree in Spring 2006.
I've been blogging since.
