TWQ: Events

Many people will have seen this wee's US Electiobn as a major event. TWQ asks about others.

What major events have you witnessed on tv or live, whether they were good or bad?

My answer is:

In May 1985, I was on vacation, and sat to watch the soccer European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus. Instead, the viewers saw carnage as riots broke out, bodies were carried out. 39 people were killed when a wall collapsed. Utter mayhem as played on the screen for about two hours live.

Now it's over to you...

But before you go...

The Enterprise Christmas Party Invite will be in the next Post. Don't miss it!

It has to be 9/11 which was earth shattering in its horror.

I remember Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, watching the towers fall on 9/11 (I couldn't seem to walk away from the TV), the riots in L.A. following the Rodney King trial, Richard Nixon resigning as President, and Bill Clinton telling bald-face lies to the country.

Seems like they're all bad things, I'm sure there were some good things in there somewhere - like the wedding of Princess Di and Prince Charles - but it seems like it's easier to remember the worse things. I wonder why that is??

Of course all I can think of today is Barack Obama victory speech on election night. No victory pumping, but humble, real, and realistic. Wonder what Michele would say.

Feeling the shock waves from the Warrington Bombs. 15 years ago, and crying for the poor children who died.

9/11 has to be on my list.

A good major event would be seeing Lewis Hamilton win the 2008 Formula One Drivers Championship! :D

jean-luc picard: The unimaginable terrorist attacks against the United States on 9/11, the sound of the explosion of The Space Shuttle Columbia over my apartment in Texas, Steve McQueen's last audio taped message played on the nightly news thanking his fans for their prayers as he fought Mesothelioma in Mexico, and the night John Lennon was murdered.

On a lighter note, I can also recall when Ensign Britney first appeared here and yes, Karena's announcement of her engagement. That is also memorable!

Live lift-off of one of the space shuttles. I was in South Carolina, and I was still able to see it, even though it was in Florida. It was very cool.

The fall of the Berlin Wall (tv)

Iran-Contra (tv)

Wedding of Charles and Diana (tv)

Diana's funeral (radio...I didn't have a tv at that time)

The Beijing Olympics! And while watching it, we kept saying, "oh &$#%8, how are we (Brits) going to do better than that?"

Jean-Luc Picard said...

Mother Hen, I agree; that awful 7 minute display by Britain at the end of the Beijing Olympics was cringingly bad!

9/11. That had me glued to the TV for days. I just watched and cried and watched and cried. Of course, I was pregnant at the time, or I don't think I would have been quite so tearful. I still would have watched non-stop, though.
