100th TWQ: Dinner Guests

This is the 100th TWQ! (The Weekend Question). To celebrate, I'm asking again the very first question again that started it all off...

Name a group of people you would choose as guests in a dinner party and why. Choose as many as you wish.

My answers are:

Virginia Woolf: Her style of writing was unique and was always worthy of discussion and interpretation. I would love to talk to her about it.

Nicole Kidman: This most versatile actress is my favourite, with roles so diverse she can adapt to any part.

David Niven: This noted raconteur of Hollywood anecdotes would liven up any dinner party.

Leonardo da Vinci: His works have always been a source of discussion, such as 'The Last Supper'and 'The Mona Lisa'.

Abraham Lincoln: A respected figure in hisory who we would all like to listen to.

Now it's over to you....

Elvis Costello and Diana Krall: Because they are my favorite musical couple.

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis: Love Johnny and his fiancee/soon to be wife is lovely.

John Lodge and Justin Hayward: It would be criminal if I left them out.

Paul McCartney: Cos I want to hear him sing live again...and he's friends with Elvis Costello.

Ah, I love this question, I was asked it in a job interview once of all places!

My choices would be:

Abraham Lincoln as the man had a brilliant mind, a fantastic sense of humor, and had one of the toughest periods in the Presidency ever.

General Ulysses Grant as he was an amazing military strategist and was the only man who had the knowledge to beat Robert E. Lee.

General Robert E. Lee because what's dinner with the first two and not this much-respected Southern General, too I'm sure that he and General Grant would have some stories to tell!

General James "Pete" Longstreet, also a Confederate Army General, for another perspective on the War of Northern Aggression (as Empress Bee likes to call it!)

And lastly, my father because he would have enjoyed this dinner even more than I would!

Good question!

My selections would be:

Jesus: I'm very curious if modern Christianity has it right or not! LOL

Leonardo da Vinci: Yeah i'd want to talk to him too, Jean-Luc.

Cleopatra: No one really knows what she was really like because all we mostly have is the Roman perspective.

Homer: Just wondering if those tales were just all pulled out of his ass or if they have some truth to them.

16:58
Blogger SQT said...

I love Squirrel's selection of Jesus, that's just brilliant.

My picks.

Mark Twain and Benjamin Franklin, two of my favorite satirical writers.

Elizabeth Bennett- One of my favorite literary characters ever.

Angelina Jolie- Just to find out if she's for real.

Hugh Jackman- Total eye candy.

Kathy Griffin- She cracks me up and I'd love to see Angelina try to get away from her.

Leonardo Da Vinci-- I'd love to hear what he thinks about the Da Vinci Code.

Well, I would have to have more than one dinner party because in order to enjoy the people in a real way, there should be a round table and no more than 6 or 8...So...Here is one of the dinner party's...

Eleanor Roosevelt.

Rosa Parks.

Martin Luther King.

Paul Newman.

Elie Weisel.

Lena Horne.

And my dear departed friend Sammy....Who would habe loved being at this dinner, and
ME, of course. That's eight people...And you didn't say they could be DEAD OR ALIVE, but this would be my first group.

17:20
Blogger TNChick said...

I'd love for it to simply be just me and my husband and invite some singer to sing for us - not sure who....

17:32
Blogger susan said...

Handel, for some beautiful music of course.

Bette Davis, one of my fave actresses.

Katherine Hepburn, another fave actress.

Jimmy Stewart to see if he was as nice in real life as he was in his films.

Lucie Rie, just to find out all the pottery tips I could, and to meet another idol.

And for a family dinner:

My Granddad and Grandma Bent who I did not get to know, and would have like to have done.

17:49
Blogger Lahdeedah said...

My guests, barring dead relatives:

Julius Caeser, I just want to know, really, if he would appreciate having his name associated with a salad, and ask him the truth about Cleopatra. Plus, he was such a fascinating character.

Plato, to see what he makes of modern government.

Mary of Magdalene, we all have a few questions for her.... and she'd probably enjoy talking to Plato.

Stephen Hawking, though he may be too smart for the other guests.

Albert Einstein, so Stephen Hawking would have someone to talk to, and so I could ask him about some of his more interesting beliefs.

William Shatner, because um, DUH, it's William Shatner.

Emily Bronte, because I love love love Wuthering Heights.

E.M. Forester, because I absolutely love his writing.

Anton Chekov.

Jacqueline Kennedy, because it would make my sister absoutely fantastically jealous, and isn't that what sisters are for? (I do love her, mind you...)

Martha Washington.

I'm sure I could think of others, but that would do for the initial guest list!

Michele sent me over to see you, Captain.

I think I'd want a few folk that would be good conversationalists. If we assume that everyone would know English, I'd pick:

Plato, Woody Allen, Kierkegaard, Annika Sorenstam, Charles Dodgson, Leonardo de Vinci and Francis Bacon.

19:55
Blogger baabaanne said...

My mom and dad, who are both dead.

My friends Mary and Bob, also departed from this earth.

My grandmother, who died when I was 11 years old. I would like to hug her one last time; she died mowing her lawn, and I never got a chance to say good-bye.

Marilyn Monroe, so I can find out how she really died. Then I will publish my findings and retire (probably to a home for the mentally ill, because no one would believe me !).

Charles Dickens, just because I want to know his writing habits (and maybe introduce him to computers and Microsoft Word).

20:25
Blogger Fab said...

Hm, a lot of good dinner guest are mentioned here:

- the girl on the painting of Vermeer's Girl with a pearl earring: to ask her why one pearl?
- painter Vermeer: to ask why his pearl girl painting differt so much from his other work
- Terry Pratchett: no need to elaborate
- the Rat Pack: but if only Frank Sinatra can come, I'm ok with that
- Johnny Depp: because he's Johnny Depp, he can bring along his wife Vanessa if he wants, I have her cd's
- Juanes: just to have him speak lovely words in Spanish to me

But the question remains, what to serve to a dinner party like that?

Frederick Douglas. Because I'd love to hear his voice.

Mary Wollstonecraft.

Jon Stewart.

The whole cast of The Office.

My friends in Paris.

Stephen King, for some macabre stuff
James Woods, just because I like him
George Bush, because he says some darn funny things!
David Suzuki, because he would be all over George Bush on the environmental issue
Lewis Black, because his comedic wit would be all over David Suzuki

A dinner party. My husband and son would be there of course, oh, and my mother would enjoy it too, I'll invite Derek Jeter for the guys. I want our best friends there, they always make us laugh. All my best blog friends will be there as well. Some of my neighbors, they are all so nice. Throw in some of my son's friends in case Derek Jeter gets boring. A great chef would be a plus. My sisters would enjoy this too,

Everyone has already made such good choices, and my brain's not working quite yet this morning. I don't know who I would invite.

If I invited a bunch of cool people to dinner, I'd have to clean my house, wouldn't I? Hmmmm, I don't know if that's going to work for me...

;-)

I'll have to think about my list.

I think I'd like to tend bar at most of these dinner parties -- just so I could listen in. (Twain and Franklin!)

And, Bee, thanks for asking my wife along to yours.

And, speaking of wives, I saw Martha Washington, but not George. Maybe you're all worried about how he could eat with his false teeth? George III said that if Washington voluntarily surrendered power, he'd be the greatest man in the world. How about GW dining with a pre-madness George III?

I'd like Jesus to come to dinner, with Hillel the Elder, Mohammad, St. Thomas Aquinas, al-Ghazali -- and Osama bin Laden and Pat Robertson... the table talk ought to be interesting there, don't you think?

I'd like to talk to Churchill, and Michael Collins, and St. Thomas More, Julius Caesar... the list is so long....

18:19
Blogger Professor Xavier said...

I know who I wouldn't invite to dinner - the X-Men. They eat like pigs.

I'd invite Mozart, to play us some music. Jim Gaffigan, because he's really funny and would keep us amused. Captain Picard, because I bet he's got a lot of very interesting stories to tell. And maybe Scarlet Johanssen, for eye candy.

Congrats Captain, and I want to thank you again for being an avid reader of my blog.

Bram Stoker - Author of Dracula... Thank god for him, without him, the modern gothic story wouldn't exist.

Mary Shelly - Another author, and contributor to the Modern Gothic Story.

Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc) - Patron saint of France, and strong female figure. I often wonder what she would be like.

Lewis Carrol - Author of one of my favorite books of all time, Through the Looking Glass. He seems like someone to meet.

Willam Shakespeare - Who needs a reason to pick The Bard?

Geoffry Chaucer - The Canterbury Tale's author. I'd like to make it a long dinner so he could finish it.

Homer - Another no-brainer.

Sophocles - I'd like to meet the man who wrote the famous plays.

Dante - What made him write the Inferno?

Johann Gutenburg - This man needs a kiss. I would kiss him, and hold him for hours. God bless him.

Thanks Captain. I enjoyed this one, very much.

Thanks for the invitation, Jean Luc. So, besides yourself, of course, for your intellectual penache, I'd also invite:

Isaac Asimov;

I think this dinner party would be out of this world!

I would like to have dinner with Stephen Fry, I believe he is a great actor and I sympathise with his mental problems. I thought he was brilliant in Oscar Wilde. I imagine he would be very stimulating company and intelligent, as well as sensitive and amusing.

This is a great question, Captain! And Happy 100th TWQ!

I wasn't around much this weekend, so I'm late on this. It's such a difficult question to answer (but I'll try)! I'm going to assume, for the sake of my own sanity, that these people have to be real. Otherwise, my head might explode with the delightful overwhelmingness of seating Shakespeare next to Hamlet.

Shakespeare. Even if I didn't love his work, he such an enigma, I'd love to know who he was.

Mozart. Brilliant man, brilliant music.

Galileo, Newton, and Einstein. I might even put them at their own table, in their own room and just sit back and listen.

Jehanne d'Arc. My hero. She sits next to me.

Humphrey Bogart. All good dinners need some eye candy. He sits someplace where I can get a very nice view of him.

Boudicca, the Celtic queen. Another hero. She also sits next to me.

Attila the Hun. Just to see what happens. I bet he and Mozart hit it off.

God. He sits at the table with Galileo, Newton and Einstein. THAT would be a conversation to trump all others.

I was out of town all weekend, so I will play now.

Nathaniel Hawthorne - my favorite writer of all time
M Night Shyamalan - love his movies, I'm sure he's a great conversationalist.
George Washington - would love to get his thoughts on the current state of our country
Nicola Tesla - for hubby to talk to, since he would have to be at the table, too!
Johnny Depp - do I even have to give a reason??
