Nothing comes to mind right now, but the reason all of these loves are unfulfilled is that the shows usually tank as soon as the two characters get together. There's a certain tension in the anticipation that's completely lost as soon as they become a couple.

Hi, I agree with Carmi. It's the angst element that makes for a good story, the characters can only ever get together for a happy ending.

ReplyDeleteMy favourite is definitely Dr Zhivago, I also like Gone with the Wind and Brief Encounters. They all have sad endings though.
