TWQ: Halloween Movies

As Halloween is almost upon us, TWQ (The Weekend Question) asks about suitable movies.

You're watching some films on Halloween; what would be a perfect selection of scary movies to run one after the other?

My answers would be:

1: Halloween: The perfect start; this classic with Jaime Lee Curtis would set the mood for the evening.

2: The Eye: This Japanese horror about a woman who can see the dead with her new eyes is unnerving.

3: Bride Of Frankenstein: This Boris Karloff movie from the 1930's is timeless in it's appeal.

4: The Fog: John Carpenter movie is very unnerving.

5: Ring: The original Japanese version of the killer video tape.

6: A Nightmare On Elm Street: Just the thing to send you to sleep!

Now it's over to you....

Happy Halloween!

  2. I saw The Omen when I was in nursing school on a Friday night. When I got back to the dorm, I discovered that everyone else had gone home for the weekend and I had to sleep in a huge old building all by myself. I didn't sleep a wink!

  3. I don't like scary movies. As I've said before, if I want to get scared, I can always look in my checkbook. But here are some good Halloween movies that even I can watch:

    1. Spaced Invaders Big Bean, Illinois is invaded by Martians on Halloween, when the local radio station rebroadcasts Orson Wells' "War of the Worlds." And the locals think the invaders are trick or treaters. You've never heard of this movie, I know, but rent it anyway.
    2. Arsenic and Old Lace. The Frank Capra original. With Cary Grant... and Teddy Roosevelt. Well, sort of. And you'll recognize Mr. Witherspoon's voice as the narrator of Fractured Fairy Tales on Rocky & Bullwinkle.
    3. Young Frankenstein. Horror movies according to Mel Brooks.
    4. The Canterville Ghost/ This is a link to the 1986 TV movie starring Sir John Gielgud and a young Alyssa Milano, but it's been remade a million times.
    5. The Ghost Breakers. Bob Hope. Zombies. Cuba. Haunted house.
    6. The Worst Witch. 1986 TV movies starring Tim Curry about a girl's troubles at a school for witches. Haven't seen this around lately, but it would be interesting to view in the post-Harry Potter age.

  4. The Prophecy, 1 through 3
    The Omen
Bram Stoker's Dracula, what is Halloween without Vampires?
    Event Horizon
    Nightmare Before Christmas
Resident Evil, what is Halloween without Vamps and Zombies?

  5. Silence of the Lambs (OMG this one freaks me out all the time -- "Hello, Clarise")
    Bram Stoker's Dracula
    The Mummy
    Nightmare Before Christmas
    Young Frankenstein
    Gremlins
    Ghostbusters
Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy

As far as your picks, the only one I might watch is the original The Fog -- the new one I don't care for.

  6. The scariest movie I can think of is the Exorcist.

I don't think I could watch anything after that other than Young Frankenstein.

  7. Young Frankenstein
Abbot and Costello meet the Wolfman
    Scary Movie 1
    Scary Movie 2
    Scary Movie 3
    Scary Movie 4
    Dracula Dead and Loving it

I deal with normal supernatural stuff everyday, I like to sit back and make fun of the stuff that is a normal occurance for me.

  8. To start with, Basil Rathbone in The Hound Of The Baskervilles - the fog, the moor, the hounds...

Then, Horror Hotel, a creepy film about a woman who visits a New England village that made a pact with the devil.

Then Hammer horrors, Witchfinder-General, Twins of Evil (some vampires have their good points ;), all culminating in the astonishingly brilliant The Wicker Man.

The original of course! No film ever needed a remake less!

  9. Tim Burton films do it for me.

Nightmare Before Christmas (none of this updated business either)
    Sleepy Hollow
    Mars Attacks

Oh and one non Burton film

    Van Helsing!
why? I like to drool while I watch :)

Can you tell I don't like scary movies much?

  10. Considering I have young children, I must be a bit circumspect. But we have already watched the original 1922 Nosferatu, Sleepy Hollow, Lemony Snicket's Unfortunate Events, And Its the Great Pumpkin. Next I'll drag out Young Frankenstein.

  11. The Omen
    The Shining
(now I'm too scared so I'll switch to...
    The Witches of Eastwick
    The Nightmare Before Christmas
    Scary Movie (the first one)

    The Shining, with Jack Nicholson.

I am normally too sqeamish for any horror film.

  14. Wow--"The Eye" I have never heard of, although it does sound rather freaky in terms of a concept. I prefer to avoid films for Halloween with what I consider to be the "one time only ending." When you watch "The Sixth Sense," it is all about the mystery, which of course, gets solved. However, once that is over, you make do a run-through of the movie once more to re-examine it with your new knowledge, but otherwise, the DVD stays on the shelf.

Well Captain Picard, I got to tell you I was a crewmember on the enterprise with Captain Kirk and Mr Spock. Being an old soldier like I am they dropped me off in South Florida to live out my remaining days.
I do want to thank you for your comments on my first blog, hope you stop by again some time.

    Thanks Charlie

  20. I'm not much on horror movies, but I definitely agree about the original "Halloween" -- a classic.

  21. Some great choices there; Young Frankenstein shows a lot. I love that film!

Curmudgeon mentioned a movie that scared me as a child: The Ghost Breakers with Bob Hope.

Perhaps I should have added The George Romero version of 'Night Of The Living Dead'. on my list?

  22. Well, I would run,"Frankenstein" the original Karloff film and 2nd..."The Bride Of Frankenstein" the Karloff-Elsa Lanchester film...A double whammy of the wonderful Frankenstein....!

Great question Jean-Luc....I'm here from Michele's this A.M.

As a third picture I think I would show, one of the old Vampire movies...same period of in films...

  23. There has to be a space theme to at least one so the original Alien is on my list. Still scares me if I watch it alone in the dark.

And Burton's Nightmare before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice as a fun one and probably the Rocky Horror Picture Show if I'm watching with friends.

I can hardly hide my antici...

And Hi, here today from Michele's.

  24. Michele sent me back this morning, Jean-Luc. I still don't like scary movies!

  25. No scary movies in our house, as they give the kids nightmares. I think I'll take the little folks around the neighborhood, then we'll let them have some chocolate before brushing their teeth VERY well and sending them to bed.

    I really hate this holiday!zd

  26. OK I like humor with my horror, so I would have to say House and House 2,and for a not funny one Poltergeist.

    I came from Michele,s :-)

  27. That Michele! Do you believe she sent me back here yet again!?

  28. I am not a big fan of scary movies. But I do like suspenseful ones, like April Fools Day. Michele sent me.

  29. Hmmm, I would have to include The Shining, The Birds, Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original) .... lots of others, but these would do for starters.
    Take care, Meow
