As Halloween is almost upon us, TWQ (The Weekend Question) asks about suitable movies.
You're watching some films on Halloween; what would be a perfect selection of scary movies to run one after the other?
My answers would be:
1: Halloween: The perfect start; this classic with Jaime Lee Curtis would set the mood for the evening.
2: The Eye: This Japanese horror about a woman who can see the dead with her new eyes is unnerving.
3: Bride Of Frankenstein: This Boris Karloff movie from the 1930's is timeless in it's appeal.
4: The Fog: John Carpenter movie is very unnerving.
5: Ring: The original Japanese version of the killer video tape.
6: A Nightmare On Elm Street: Just the thing to send you to sleep!

I saw The Omen when I was in nursing school on a Friday night. When I got back to the dorm, I discovered that everyone else had gone home for the weekend and I had to sleep in a huge old building all by myself. I didn't sleep a wink!

I don't like scary movies. As I've said before, if I want to get scared, I can always look in my checkbook. But here are some good Halloween movies that even I can watch:
ReplyDelete1. Spaced Invaders Big Bean, Illinois is invaded by Martians on Halloween, when the local radio station rebroadcasts Orson Wells' "War of the Worlds." And the locals think the invaders are trick or treaters. You've never heard of this movie, I know, but rent it anyway.
2. Arsenic and Old Lace. The Frank Capra original. With Cary Grant... and Teddy Roosevelt. Well, sort of. And you'll recognize Mr. Witherspoon's voice as the narrator of Fractured Fairy Tales on Rocky & Bullwinkle.
3. Young Frankenstein. Horror movies according to Mel Brooks.
4. The Canterville Ghost/ This is a link to the 1986 TV movie starring Sir John Gielgud and a young Alyssa Milano, but it's been remade a million times.
5. The Ghost Breakers. Bob Hope. Zombies. Cuba. Haunted house.
6. The Worst Witch. 1986 TV movies starring Tim Curry about a girl's troubles at a school for witches. Haven't seen this around lately, but it would be interesting to view in the post-Harry Potter age.

I deal with normal supernatural stuff everyday, I like to sit back and make fun of the stuff that is a normal occurance for me.
To start with, Basil Rathbone in The Hound Of The Baskervilles - the fog, the moor, the hounds...

Then Hammer horrors, Witchfinder-General, Twins of Evil (some vampires have their good points ;), all culminating in the astonishingly brilliant The Wicker Man.
The original of course! No film ever needed a remake less!
Tim Burton films do it for me.

Considering I have young children, I must be a bit circumspect. But we have already watched the original 1922 Nosferatu, Sleepy Hollow, Lemony Snicket's Unfortunate Events, And Its the Great Pumpkin. Next I'll drag out Young Frankenstein.

ReplyDeleteI am normally too sqeamish for any horror film.
Wow--"The Eye" I have never heard of, although it does sound rather freaky in terms of a concept. I prefer to avoid films for Halloween with what I consider to be the "one time only ending." When you watch "The Sixth Sense," it is all about the mystery, which of course, gets solved. However, once that is over, you make do a run-through of the movie once more to re-examine it with your new knowledge, but otherwise, the DVD stays on the shelf.

Well, I would run,"Frankenstein" the original Karloff film and 2nd..."The Bride Of Frankenstein" the Karloff-Elsa Lanchester film...A double whammy of the wonderful Frankenstein....!

There has to be a space theme to at least one so the original Alien is on my list. Still scares me if I watch it alone in the dark.
